Internal and External Automated Wheel Blast System

This system enables simultaneous internal and external surface preparation of large wind tower sections using centrifugal shot blasting technology. The blast boom assembly is securely floor-mounted, housing the abrasive cleaning and recovery equipment. Tower sections are rotated and traversed over the boom using customer-supplied rotation carts and drive systems. Steel abrasive is introduced via the bucket elevator, then conveyed to an auger and rotary screen for classification. Oversized debris (>1/4") is separated and discharged into a waste drum, while the remaining abrasive undergoes air-wash separation in a falling curtain, removing dust and fines via dedicated dust collectors (12,000 SCFM internal; 8,000 SCFM external) and secondary waste drums.

Cleaned abrasive is metered to centrifugal blast wheels:

  • Internal: Abrasive is fed via variable-speed belt to the boom-mounted wheel, propelling media onto the interior surface. Approximately 40% rebounds to return belts/wings for recirculation; the remaining 60% is vacuum-recovered through a cyclone separator.
  • External: Abrasive is augured to wheels on a mobile platform that contacts the outer surface, with spent media captured and returned within the blast cabinet.

This closed-loop recovery system ensures efficient, environmentally controlled operation with minimal waste.
